1.   Special Needs Planning series continues

The Special Needs Planning series continues on January 18 with a presentation on trusts. Trusts may be particularly helpful for a child, sibling, spouse or loved one who has a disability, and who is currently receiving government benefits or may be eligible for government benefit programs in the future. Speakers will discuss what is a special needs trust and operation of a special needs trust.  The presentation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 at the University of Toledo Nitschke Hall. Click here for the Special Needs Planning Flyer.

2.   Board calendar available online

The 2018 Board calendar is now available online. The calendar identifies major events planned by the Board in the coming year, including dinner-dances and Special Olympics tournaments. We have also identified Board meeting dates, dates for Family & Advocate forums, and major holidays. Use this link to read, print or download your calendar.

3.    STABLE Accounts are the 1st in the nation to accept direct employer contributions

An Ohio-based company, UCO Industries, and STABLE Accounts have partnered together to develop the ability for employers to directly deposit contributions into an ABLE Account. This allows STABLE Accounts to be used as an employer incentive program for long-term savings, similar to a 401(k) retirement account. Ohio was the first state in the nation to launch STABLE Accounts, and now UCO Industries becomes the first employer in the nation to offer STABLE Accounts directly to their employees as a long-term savings solution.  UCO has set the bar high as a model of creating equal employment opportunities. UCO will be contributing an additional 4% of the employees’ wages to eligible employees’ STABLE Account.

5.   Pottery classes offered to teens with autism

Bittersweet’s Social Living Club (SLC) will be partnering with Sunshine Studios to offer a pottery class to teens with autism.  The SLC is a recreational program that provides social and community opportunities to teens with autism.  Teens in the SLC will learn the basics of ceramics and pottery.

Beginning January 9, the six week program will be on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Sunshine Studios which is located at 305 Conant Street, Maumee, OH 43537.   The cost for the four week program is $60.  Scholarship opportunities from ProMedica and the Great Lakes Collaborative for Autism are available.   SLC participants must be able to participate in the activity independently, or with the appropriate support staff provided by the family.  For more information, contact Taylor Barndt at 419.206.7803 or tbarndt@bittersweetfarms.org.
